Wine illustrations
Recently, I have had a few assignments to illustrate various stories for the Food section of The Tribune. The two that I have enjoyed most dealt with wine stories. The fist story was on how screw cap wine bottles are becoming more popular, even with expensive wines, because cork is becoming expensive and there is no risk of cork contamination with the screw top bottles. The second story is similar, but on how boxed wines are becoming more popular with outdoor enthusiasts because glass is easy to break when hiking and each box is equal to 4 bottles of wine.
For both of these illustrations, I chose to light paint the bottles and boxes. This technique, as discussed in an earlier post is basically a long exposure ~30 seconds, where the main light used to illuminate the subject is a flashlight. For these photos, I used a combination of flashlights as well as an off camera Canon strobe (580ex) triggered manually to light the various elements of the photo.
Enjoy.

The Great Salt Lake
I went on a little feature hunt yesterday and ended up at the famous Salt Lake of Utah. it is funny. Everyone outside of Utah thinks everyone who lives in Utah always hang out at the Lake. It is thought to be like a resort destination with beautiful beaches and nice salty water. In reality, the lake stinks like rotting eggs, and is the home to million of tiny brine flies. It is true that the lake is salty, usually around 15% salinity, but it is one of those places most people visit once or twice in their life time and that is plenty.
So, I waded out in the waste deep salt later and photographed some tourists from Germany and Switzerland floating in the water.

Geekfest Chicago
I spent the past weekend in Chicago at GeekFest 2006. It was great to see so many old friends while making many new ones.
Thanks to all the photo geeks for the great dose of inspiration. It was refreshing to make pictures just for me.
Here are some snaps from around the city.
