Jazz v Pacers

The Utah Jazz dominated the Indiana Pacers 122-96 in their last preseason game Thursday night. Here are some pics.

Pregame Prayer

Utah Soccer

Utah coach Ron Manning has turned the program into a national contender. The Utes are ranked No. 11 entering the final week of the regular season.

The Killers

I got to cover The Killers Saturday night at The Salt Air pavilion outside of Salt Lake. This was a different experience because the band did not allow photographers to be in the pit, directly in front of the stage. So, I shot from up in the VIP balcony and then made my way to the back of the venue and made some more pics. Enjoy.

The Painted Pony

Here are some shots from a restaurant review of The Painted Pony located in St. George, UT. The food was great and fun to shoot.

The Dixie Salad Twist with apples, pears, endive, pomegranate, house marshmallows, spiced pecans, and vanilla bean vinaigrette $7.

The Bacon Wrapped Duck with apple stuffing, thyme infused potatoes, and cider reduction $26.

The Grilled Tenderloin Steak with rosemary whipped potatoes, shitake demi, and asparagus $28.

Baritone in the Road

Twelve-year old Taylor Rogerson practices his baritone outside of his Salt Lake home. Rogerson has been playing the baritone for two years and is a member of the Hillside Middle School band. "I like to practice outside because I get to feel the air."

World Senior Games

I got to spend a day shooting a few different events at the 2006 Huntsman World Senior Games held in St. George, Ut.

The games began in 1987 as the World Senior Games, an international senior sports competition. Founded by Daisy and John H. Morgan, Jr., the Games began with their vision of an international sports event for men and women ages 50 and better. Both agreed that the golden years were better when good health and physical fitness became a way of life, not an occasional hobby.

Since I had only one day, I only got to four events, but it was lots of fun photographing these senior athletes. The smell of Bengay permeated the air...

-------------------
This is the Cowboy Action Shooting event held at the Dixie Desperados shooting range. All of the athletes are required to wear full western garb and all had a western alias. The object was to shoot as many pre-determined targets, as fast as possible. They even let me shoot some...and no, I am still not a supporter of the NRA.

The next sport was lawn bowling. I had never seen this sport before, but the people were nice and there was some sweet light.

Next: Tennis and Track

The last race at track and field set a World Record. Sisters Nelda Shippen Reed, 80, Ruby Shippen Call, 83, Verla Shippen Ball, 91, and Ava Shippen Hessing, 85, became the first relay team made up entirely of octogenarians, to run the 4x100 meter race. Since this has never been attempted before, as long as they stayed in their lane and made clean hand-offs, they could take as long as they needed. Their time was 3:51.85.

Pike-Split Basket Toss

BYU cheerleader Jessica Bingham is currently in the 2nd round of the Athlon Sports Sideline Spirit Contest for the best cheerleaders in College Football. It is not hard to see why after watching her perform Saturday at BYU's football game.

Moab | Arches

Ash and I took a quick two-day trip down to southeastern Utah to mountain bike in Moab and hike in Arches National Park. The slick rock was incredible to bike on-a true mountain biker's paradise. The trails did kick my butt, but it was worth every minute.

At Arches, we hiked in The Fiery Furnace- a labyrinth of narrow sandstone canyons and fins. This relatively small area is one of the most incredible and spectacular places in the park. Of course, we also saw the delicate arch. If you are ever in Utah, this is worth the 4 hr drive from Salt Lake.

Muse | The Strokes | Jim Gaffigan

I have seen some really great concerts in the past few weeks. The first one was Muse, who played at The Salt Air. Their show rocked but unfortunately, they only played about 75 minutes. If you have not heard of them, I highly recommend checking out their music. Their early music sounds suspiciously like Radiohead, but they have come a long way developing their sound and style.

The next show was The Strokes. They played at a little club downtown. I was covering the show for The Tribune so I was able to get right up to the stage. After a few songs, I moved towards the back of the venue and made a few more pictures. They were great live and the only bad part of the night happened when someone spilled a pint of beer down my back.

The last show was comedian Jim Gaffigan. He was hilarious and very pale. Ash and I hung out after the show and were able to take a picture with Jim and his Wolverine-looking opener.

Hershey Park Happy

While back in Pennsylvania, we visited "The Sweetest Place on Earth" aka Hershey Park. We didn't have a lot of time, but we ride the "Hershey's Great American Chocolate Tour" ride. If you have not been there, you get into a little cart that takes you on an automated tour of a virtual chocolate factory. At the end, they take your picture… and my favorite part, give you some free chocolate. Here is a brief description from their site:

"Our new tour experience features updated scenes, animated characters, innovative special effects and a spectacular finale!
Your tour begins in the tropical rain forest where cocoa beans grow. As the beans are harvested, follow their journey across the ocean to America, where they are delivered to THE SWEETEST PLACE ON EARTH —Hershey, Pennsylvania.

Then, engage your senses as the cocoa beans continue through a simulated HERSHEY’S Chocolate Factory. Here you will see, feel, and hear the processes that deliciously transform the beans into milk chocolate. This fun and informative ride concludes with a free sample of HERSHEY’S great American chocolate!"

More Vacation Pics

Here are a few more pictures of the bros, "Big D, Medium D and Little D," on the boardwalk at Ocean City, MD. They were taken with my Canon Elph on the sepia tone setting.

These next pictures were taken in Baltimore while Ash and I were visiting our friends and Baltimore Sun photogs Monica Lopassay and Karl Ferron. One of Monica's neighbors was having a crab fest and we ate some delicious Chesapeake Bay crabs. A friendly spider also decided to join the feast. We then went out for drinks at one of my favorites: The Brewers Art and ended the evening at an eclectic artsy late-night breakfast joint. Good times.
