Kobe and the Lakers were back in town and defeated the Jazz 102-94. Half of our strobes were not working but I used the two remaining ones anyway. For most of the game, I shot with a 600 in the upper upper deck of the EnergySolutions Arena. It is a pretty decent vantage point and I think I will use it in future games.

QUAC
The Queer Utah Aquatic Club had a swim meet last Saturday that I get to cover for 20 minutes before running off to another assignment. Other than the cross-dressing cheerleaders, everything else was just like a regular swim meet. But had I been there last year, I could have photographed swim relay races in full bondage gear... That would have been awesome to see.

SLC Tattoo
I set up a black seamless background and some lights at the 4th annual international tattoo convention in SLC and made portraits of fun tattoos. I put together the picture collage on deadline and it ran 5 columns on Local front. It's fun when ideas come together well. And no, I did not get a tattoo myself, but I would be lying if I said I wasn't tempted. Perhaps next year....

Trolley Square
By now, most of you have probably heard about the shootings that happened last night at Trolley Square. This killing spree-which killed six and wounded ten- took place two miles from my house in downtown Salt Lake City. My editor called me at midnight to ask if I could go over to the scene around 5am, to releave a fellow photographer who had been at covering event through the night.
By the time I arrived 5:20am, all of the bodies had been taken out of the mall and the 4 block, 239,000 sq. feet crime scene, was blocked off with police tape. I walked around the perimiter of the mall, taking pictures of a few makeshift memorials that had started. My assignment was to make pictures that showed the area of the mall in daylight. Since the shootings happened at night, most of the photographs did not show much of the enviroment-and most people outside of Salt Lake have no idea what Trolley Square looks like.
I also photographed some people who returned to the mall to pick up their cars, which had been impouned overnight in the parking lot.
I wish I could speak more eloquently about this, but I will leave that to the talened reporters at The Tribune. You can read all of our coverage at the following link.

Swimming from Below
I shot a few races of the 5A state swimming champinoships from the observation window five feet below the surface of the water. It was incrediibly hard to time when each heat would begin because you can't hear anything down there. I ended up staying down there for an extra 15 minutes because I didn't realize the meet had ended. It was only after I saw the timing pads being pulled from the pool that I left.

SLC Inversion
Here is a composite photo Trent Nelson and I did to illustrate the
pollution that was choking the Salt Lake valley the past 2 weeks due
to an inversion. I took the picture on the left on Sunday and Trent
took the pic on the right Wednesday afternoon after a winter storm
blew the pollution away. I think it was a good story-telling element that helped to illustrate how bad the inversion was.
