By now, most of you have probably heard about the shootings that happened last night at Trolley Square. This killing spree-which killed six and wounded ten- took place two miles from my house in downtown Salt Lake City. My editor called me at midnight to ask if I could go over to the scene around 5am, to releave a fellow photographer who had been at covering event through the night.
By the time I arrived 5:20am, all of the bodies had been taken out of the mall and the 4 block, 239,000 sq. feet crime scene, was blocked off with police tape. I walked around the perimiter of the mall, taking pictures of a few makeshift memorials that had started. My assignment was to make pictures that showed the area of the mall in daylight. Since the shootings happened at night, most of the photographs did not show much of the enviroment-and most people outside of Salt Lake have no idea what Trolley Square looks like.
I also photographed some people who returned to the mall to pick up their cars, which had been impouned overnight in the parking lot.
