Utah Flash’s Bennet Davis, left, trims teammate Orien Greene’s hair in a laundry room at The Grove Hotel before their game against the Tulsa 66ers Tuesday, January 5, 2010. Players in this league can only earn a maximum of $25,500/year.
Tribune reporter Ross Siler and I spent some time with Utah Flash assistant coach Mark Madsen the other week during the NBA D-League Showcase in Boise, Idaho. A member of two Los Angeles Lakers championship teams in 2001 and 2002, Madsen was willing to start climbing the coaching ranks from one of the lowest rungs imaginable, a league in which top players make $25,500 and assistant coaches about the same.

…not really. The whole thing was a hoax by Flash owner Brandt Andersen. The much touted match between Bryon Russell and Michael Jordan never came to be. Instead fans watched a skit with Russell and a Michael Jordan impostor. Needless to say, the fans were not amused. You can read more about the hoax HERE, HERE and HERE.
A Michael Jordan impostor played by Melvin Brown of Lansing, Michigan makes his way into the arena during half-time of the Utah Flash basketball game at the McKay Events Center on the Utah Valley University campus Monday December 7, 2009. Standing on either side of Brown are body guards Pate Tuilevuka, right, and Laauli Fonoti.
